Summer’s for the Birds

Categories:

By Marita Klements, Assistant Director

Summer is the perfect time to start a new hobby.  Bird watching’s great for the whole family!

We have several items in our Library of Things to get you started.

There’s the bird themed Explorer Kit, which includes the books National Geographic Kids Ultimate Explorer Field Guide: Birds by Julie Beer, and Backpack Explorer: Bird Watch, as well as a magnifying glass, a compass, a pair of binoculars, and a note book and colored pencils.

A birdwatching kit for adults, a pair of binoculars, and don’t forget all of the bird books and field guides!

While you’re at it, why not create a profile at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to track your bird watching?  If you log your bird sightings there, they will contribute to hundreds of conservation decisions and peer-reviewed papers, thousands of student projects, and help inform bird research worldwide.  They have an app called eBird that you can download to your phone to log your bird sightings on the go, and another called Merlin that you can use for bird identification.
