September is sustainability month. Libraries have long believed a sustainable model, after all, why not have 1 copy of a book that all of your neighbors can take turns reading, instead of each of them buying a copy they’re likely to only read once or twice? We here at the Lynnfield Library are trying to do all that we can to make our community a more sustainable, environmentally healthy place.
This year we’ll be focusing a lot on plants and gardens, starting with Todd Breitenstein, the Grateful Gardener, who will be explaining Natural Gardening and Living Soils to us on September 6th at 2 PM. On the 27th we’ll have a virtual program called Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors, sponsored by the Blue Marble Librarians, the Eastham Public Library and the Brewster’s Ladies’ Library. Imagine is a storytelling initiative that calls for fiction writers to envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress, imagining intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope.
Our children’s room will be learning about Butterflies and Moths with Hands on Nature on the 21st, and on September 14th we’ll have program for teens and adults where we’ll be painting teapot planters, so you can bring a little green inside as well.
While you’re thinking sustainably, why not borrow something from our Library of Things, whether it’s a puzzle, a pom pom maker, binoculars, or even a reusable tote bag to make a quick stop at the grocery store on your way home from the library? We’re here to help you live a sustainable life, in September, and all year.
