No Two Persons by Erica Bauermeister The title of this novel stems from the idea that no two persons ever read the same book and the power of fiction as it helps each of us through the difficult times in our lives..  Struggling with personal issues during college, Alice wrote ‘Theo‘ to understand such issues and the impact they had on her.  Each chapter in the book details the impact of the novel on others and how each of them were helped by reading it.

Oath and Honor: a memoir and a warning by Liz Cheney.  I listened to the audiobook version of this title, read by the author.  This is an account of the events leading to the January 6th insurrection and the resulting Congressional Select Committee and its work to understand the reasons for and impact of the event on the country.

Wifedom: Mrs. Orwell’s Invisible Life by Anna Founder This title was read by my book club last month, a group that has been together for over 25 years.  Anna Founder always appreciated the works of George Orwell, reading many of his books several times in her own life.  In this book, she writes about Eileen O’Shaughnessy, Orwell’s wife. Married in 1936, Founder explores Eileen’s personal life and what it means to be the wife of a famous author and her role as the editor of many of his books.

In My Time of Dying: how I came face-to-face with the idea of an afterlife by Sabastian Junger. I listened to the audiobook version of this title, read by the author.  Always questioning the role of the medical establishment, Junger is faced with crippling abdominal pain in the summer of 2020 and is rushed to hospital, where he almost dies.  A confirmed atheist before this experience, Junger is visited by his dead father as he explores the emotional and spiritual response to the issue of mortality and what will happen to each of us when we die.

Hitler’s Girl: The British Aristocracy and the Third Reich on the Eve of WWII by Lauren Young – Anyone who has ever enjoyed a good historical conspiracy theory will enjoy this book.  Did they really do that?  Do you think it’s true?  Lauren Young has gone through all of the recently declassified WWII documents in the British archives, and she’s bringing the receipts on who did what!  Plus maybe one more (very well supported!) conspiracy theory for good measure.

Here for the Wrong Reasons by Annabel Paulsen and Lydia Wang This book was so fun to read! On a tv show based on The Bachelor (called Hopelessly Devoted…yes, there are jokes about Grease), two female contestants fall for each other. One has known she was a lesbian since a young age, while the other learns during their time together. It’s such a great book about discovering yourself, full of humor and romance. I feel like I was on The Bachelor myself now!

The Last of the Mohicans by The BBC, This eight part BBC miniseries produced in 1971 is one of the most faithful adaptations of the James Fenimore Cooper novel.  For an exciting contrast, watch the 1992 film production starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Hawkeye.

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley, which I enjoyed because it took people from different times and transported them to the “present, ” our near future. There were government shenanigans and confused time travelers.

A Most Agreeable Murder by Julia Seales, which is a bit like many novels set during the Regency, except for the fact of a murder… It’s a very compelling historical mystery.

3 Women, I really enjoyed this slice of life/psychological drama starring Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek. It begins as a sad look at the women’s loneliness and eventually develops into an analysis of female archetypes and identity. It was very strange but very good with excellent performances.

Suzume – Suzume is an animated film directed by Makoto Shinkai, who also made one of my favorite movies, Your Name. The animation is gorgeous–it’s perfect and makes the world incredibly lifelike. The plot explores the trauma caused by natural disasters in Japan with a magical twist.
