Lynnfield Library Staff Picks: August 2024

  • Abby Porter, Director

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson – I just finished the third book in this trilogy and am amazed at every twist and turn. Every time I thought I had a handle on how the magic worked or what was happening, I quickly discovered how wrong I was. Despite each book being over 500 pages, all three were so compelling.

Book

Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett – Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite writers and I had never read one of the Guards books in Discworld before. This was utterly delightful. I loved all of the characters and every strange development, but, in particular, I love Ook, the orangutan librarian who will not let a book go missing.

Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible by Nene Yukimori – This YA manga series was adorable all the way through. Shiraishi has no presence and people tend to forget he is around, if they notice him at all. Except Kubo. Kubo says hi every day and forces people to notice Shiraishi, causing Shiraishi’s life to change in the best way possible. A very wholesome story about finding your voice, making yourself heard, and being a good friend.

Book

  • Alison Quill

Summerlong by Dean Bakopoulos – I genuinely enjoyed this book. A very silly and thoughtful story about marriage and relationships.

Book

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore –  Intriguing from the very beginning. Full of twists and turns, one of those books I stayed up all night to finish to see how it ended!

Back to the Garden by Laurie R. King

This was the title read by my bookclub this month. A  skull is unexpectedly found during construction on the Gardener Estate and questions are raised as to the connection to The Highwayman, a killer of those he picked up while hitchhiking. Raquel Laing, the inspector assigned to the case, faces questions about her own past as she navigates clues that arise  to solve the identity of the skull.

You Like It Darker by Stephen King

I listened to the audiobook version of this collection of stories read by Will Patton with Stephen King. I have not read one of King’s novels in quite some time and enjoyed listening to these stories, two of which I especially enjoyed: ‘Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream’, which upends his life and many others and ‘The Answer Man’, reminding us that unbearable tragedy can still create a meaningful life.

The Trees by Everett Percival

When investigators from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrive in the rural town of Money to investigate a murder they are met with suspicion and many questions as the murder apparently involved two bodies, one of which resembled Emmett Till. Several murders around the country also include the second body, which keeps disappearing during the investigations of each murder. Suspecting retribution for the original murder of Till, the investigators identify the lack of due process in the original murder of Till and the racism that still engulfs the town.

Bad Kitty gets a phone by Nick Bruel

While the Bad Kitty series is popular among children, the adults with dry and dark humor can certainly enjoy sarcasm and snark the series offers. The narration and character dialogue, particularly from Bad Kitty, are filled with sarcastic remarks, snarky comments, and witty retorts.  I especially recommend Bad Kitty gets a Phone.

Book

  • Marita Klements, Assistant Director

The Book of Wild Flowers: Reflections on Favorite Plants by Angie Lewin and Christopher Stocks.  This is a beautiful book about the wild flowers of England.  I enjoyed learning the stories of all of the different flowers.

Book

Grown Woman Talk by Sharon Malone.  This is a very down-to-earth informative manual about health and aging.  It’s like a talk from a reassuringly knowledgeable friend.

Book

I really enjoyed Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez, the August book for the Last Tuesday Book Group.

Here by Richard McGuire – This graphic novel focuses on one fixed point from the same viewpoint throughout time, with scenes of the past and future superimposed on each page. Though the plot is loose, Here explores each individual’s impact on the story of a specific place.

Book

What We Do in the Shadows (TV Show) – This hysterical horror-comedy sets itself apart from other vampire media by asking: what if vampires were complete morons? I can’t rave enough about this show. Perfect for spooky season!

DVD

Orphan Black (TV Series) – In this science fiction thriller, a woman named Sarah discovers that she’s a clone–and that she and her “sisters” are being hunted. Tatiana Maslany portrays 15+ clones and her performances are so distinct that you forget half the characters are played by only one actress.
