Wednesday, June 19 is Juneteenth and while the Library will be closed, the day is much more than just another day off. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the news of the end of the Civil War reached Galveston, Texas, more than 2 years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery. Learn more about the history of Juneteenth and how it is celebrated below. Juneteenth will be celebrated in Lynnfield by the group Lynnfield for Love on June 17th, with an Opal Lee Walk and flag raising. You can also find other local Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremonies here.
