At the Lynnfield Library, we are always busy. We wanted to give you the opportunity to learn what a librarian does all day! Every few weeks, we’ll be featuring a different staff member to show you what goes on behind the scenes. This week, hear from Head of Technical Services Nicole Goolishian!
In the Technical Services Department, we handle all incoming items as well as all of the technology you see inside the library. Each day is a little different depending on current projects, orders, collection development, and any troubleshooting that may come up. Some days run like clockwork and other days unexpected issues come up that need immediate attention. On this particular day, as with most Mondays, the priority is unpacking all deliveries from over the weekend and getting items into circulation as efficiently as possible before the end of the week.
Monday October 5th
12:00pm-12:30pm – Catching up on e-mails from over the weekend, printing and sorting new invoices from vendors, reaching out to vendors regarding a few recent orders and upcoming hardware updates
12:30-1:00pm – Troubleshooting issue with library equipment
1:00pm-2:15pm – Packages! Receiving new deliveries, sorting materials, and cross-referencing invoices with our order sheets to make sure pricing is correct. Sorted through received items to determine what collections these new arrivals belong to and what items are on hold and thus take priority.
2:15-2:40pm – Attend weekly Department Head Meeting
2:40-4:30 – New items prepped for cataloging with fresh barcodes and stamped with the date of arrival inside the book. Determine call numbers and pass items to Tech. Services staff member Pauline who will then process all library items. All new items added to the collection within a given week are featured in a weekly newsletter through the library’s Wowbrary service.
4:30pm-5:00pm – Lunch
5:00pm-7:00pm – Weekly coverage on the Reference Desk

Barcoding new arrivals before they head to Pauline for spine labels, book covers, etc.
