At the Lynnfield Library, we are always busy. We wanted to give you the opportunity to learn what a librarian does all day! Every few weeks, we’ll be featuring a different staff member to show you what goes on behind the scenes. This week, we are featuring Lauren Fox, the Head of Youth Services.
As Head of Youth Services, I mostly work with children and teens, as well as with their parents and caregivers. This includes running programming, ordering and recommending books and other materials, and more. I’m also part of our social media team and work once a week at our Reference Desk. My first priority is always making sure that kids and teens have access to materials and resources they need, as well as to both fun and educational events! Here’s what a typical day for me might look like:
9:00-9:30: Check and respond to emails that came in late yesterday or early this morning.
9:30-10:00: Pull children’s and young adult books that are needed to fill holds. Some of these are put on our shelf for Lynnfield patrons and others are sent to other libraries.
10:00-10:30: Look into possible presenters for upcoming programs and events. Email or call presenters to check their availability and learn more about what they offer.
10:30-11:00: Select 5 picture books and 5 chapter books for a parent who emailed looking for Surprise New Book Bags for their two children.
11:00-12:00: Set up for, film, and edit a Story Time video, then post it to YouTube.
12:00-1:00: Lunch.
1:00-2:00: Prepare social media materials, including creating graphics, deciding what to write, and posting to Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
2:00-3:00: Meet with Abby to talk about some ideas we have for take-home craft kits and an upcoming all ages program.
3:00-4:00: Order materials for our physical Children’s and Young Adult collections as well as for OverDrive (Libby).
4:00-4:30: Start work on a list of themed picture books which will be posted to our website next week.
4:30-5:00: Check social media to make sure any scheduled posts are gone up properly and respond to any unanswered comments or messages. Check email and respond to anything that needs to be answered today.
