We are very pleased to share that the Library is a recipient of a federally-funded LSTA Grant award called “On the Same Page”. The grant extends from October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014. Libraries around the country have been hosting Community Read programs, sometimes also called “One Book One Community”, or other similar titles, for several years. Lynnfield Public Library has decided to call our event Lynnfield Reads Together!
So what is a Community Read? In short, people in a community come together through the reading and discussion of a common book.
More information about the grant and selection of titles from the grant application:
“Lynnfield is at a crossroads, navigating concurrent desires to keep conservation land intact while meeting growing needs for athletic field space and generating tax revenue from commercial developments to support highly-valued public services. Our project, “Lynnfield Reads Together,” will create an opportunity for all sides of this debate to come together over a shared reading enterprise. We will offer families and adults of all ages the experience to read or listen to Bill Bryson’s bestseller A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail and children’s counterparts. Chosen for their appeal to sports communities and conservation advocates alike, the books will be a point for discussion of issues concerning outdoor recreation.
In addition to purchasing many formats of the titles, we will offer various programs, including book discussions, speakers, photography exhibitions, local guided walks, and a scavenger hunt. The Library will be collaborating with the Lynnfield Schools, the Conservation Commission, the Recreation Commission, the Boston Sports Club, and the Friends of the Library. We hope to foster a lasting connection between the Library, the schools, the conservationists, and the athletic community through their engagement here.”
Department Heads Laura Brosnan and Samantha Cabral will be co-coordinating the grant activities. Book discussions are set to begin in March and all other programs and activities will take place through June 2014.
